🌋 Places to Visit on Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura isn’t just about sunshine and beaches — it’s an island full of character, contrasts, and hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. From sweeping golden dunes to peaceful fishing villages and volcanic peaks, every corner of the island tells a story. Whether you’re exploring by car, taking a local excursion, or simply wandering from your base at Sol Escape in Caleta de Fuste, there’s so much to see and do.

🏜️ 1. Corralejo Natural Park & Sand Dunes

Located in the north of the island, the Corralejo Natural Park is one of Fuerteventura’s most iconic landscapes. Endless rolling dunes stretch for miles, with turquoise sea on one side and volcanic mountains on the other — a photographer’s dream.
You can walk barefoot through the soft golden sand, stop for a swim, or watch kite surfers dance across the water.

📍 Approx. 45 minutes from Sol Escape by car.

🏝️ 2. Isla de Lobos (Lobos Island)

A short ferry ride from Corralejo takes you to Isla de Lobos, a small uninhabited island protected as a nature reserve. It’s perfect for a peaceful day of walking, swimming, and exploring. The island has a network of trails, crystal-clear lagoons, and a lighthouse viewpoint offering spectacular ocean views.

💡 Bring snacks, water, and your camera — there are no shops on the island.

🏖️ 3. Jandía & Sotavento Beaches

Down in the south, Jandía Peninsula is home to some of the longest and most breathtaking beaches in Europe. Sotavento Beach is famous for its shallow lagoons and world-class windsurfing conditions. Even if you’re not taking to the water, it’s a stunning spot for walking along endless stretches of white sand.

📍 Roughly 1.5 hours from Caleta de Fuste — ideal for a full-day trip.

🌊 4. Playa de Cofete

For something wild and remote, Playa de Cofete on the southwest coast is a must-see. Surrounded by dramatic mountains and often shrouded in mist, it’s one of the most atmospheric beaches in the Canary Islands. There are no major facilities, but that’s part of its magic — it’s nature at its rawest and most beautiful.

⚠️ Access is via a rough road — consider a 4×4 or guided tour.

🪨 5. Ajuy Caves & Fishing Village

On the west coast lies Ajuy, a peaceful village with black volcanic sand and spectacular sea caves carved into the cliffs. You can walk along the coastal path above the caves for incredible ocean views or enjoy fresh seafood at a local restaurant.

📍 Around 45 minutes from Caleta de Fuste.

🏡 6. Betancuria — The Island’s Historic Heart

Step back in time with a visit to Betancuria, Fuerteventura’s former capital. Nestled in the mountains, this charming whitewashed village is full of history, quiet streets, and local culture. Visit the Santa María Church, stop for a coffee in the square, and take in panoramic views of the valleys below.

📍 A scenic 40-minute drive inland from Sol Escape.

🌄 7. Mirador Morro Velosa

For one of the best views on the island, head to Morro Velosa Viewpoint, just above Betancuria. Designed by famous Canarian artist César Manrique, the lookout offers breathtaking views across the island’s volcanic landscape — perfect for photos or a sunset stop on your drive.

💡 8. El Cotillo & Tostón Lighthouse

Head to the northwest coast for a more local, laid-back feel. El Cotillo is a picturesque fishing village surrounded by lagoon-like beaches with calm turquoise waters. Just beyond town, the Tostón Lighthouse sits proudly on the rocks, offering beautiful coastal walks and a small maritime museum.

📍 About 1 hour 10 minutes from Caleta de Fuste.

🏰 9. Castillo de San Buenaventura

Just minutes from Sol Escape, this 18th-century stone fortress — also known as the Castillo Tower — once protected the coast from pirates. It’s one of Caleta de Fuste’s most recognisable landmarks and makes a great stop while exploring the harbour and promenade area.

📍 Walking distance from the apartment.

🐿️ 10. Chipmunk Mountain

A local favourite! Near Caleta de Fuste’s shopping and restaurant area, this small hill is home to friendly chipmunks that love to greet visitors. It’s a fun stop for children and adults alike — just remember to bring a few nuts or seeds, and they’ll happily pose for photos.

📍 5–10 minutes from Sol Escape on foot.

🚗 Explore, Discover & Relax

Fuerteventura is an island best explored at your own pace. Hire a car, take a scenic drive, or join one of the many local excursions departing from Caleta de Fuste Marina — including boat trips, catamaran cruises, and snorkelling adventures.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year, mild ocean breezes, and welcoming local hospitality, it’s easy to see why Fuerteventura is one of Europe’s favourite island destinations.
